Peter Garvey passed away on September 5, 1989 in Yonkers, NY. He was 44 years old. He died of brain cancer nine months after the illness being detected. As informed by Ray Blanco.


Father Hauck passed away a few years ago. I went to his funeral at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall NY where he was pastor.  As informed by Tom Robinson.


I don't know if you know this but Tom Clancy passed away two weeks ago.  I attended the funeral. Clancy and I were in contact quite a bit through the years. we lived in the same town at one point. Tom Clancy was my link to all the past students from Dubois.  I will miss him.  As informed by Bob Faulborn Dec. 24, 1999.


The First school reunion of the alumni of Bishop Dubois high school of New York City will take place of August 6, 2000. The event is being organized by Father Driscoll, Mike Kaylor(1971) and Sean Murphy(1971).   An alumni from almost every class year was present.


Edward Doran, class of 1955, passed away on Sept. 16, 1998 as a result of a massive heart attack. He was 61.  As informed by his sister, Yankeesagainoct @ aol.com


Frank Finan class of 68 passed away in June 1994. I did not know Frank at Dubois but met him at JPMorgan. Frank was the brother of Andy Finan class of 70.  As informed by Ray Dowd.


Kenny Rankin who graduated from Dubois in the Class of 1968. Corrected, please see Newpaper Stories
Rankin was a major folk singer in the 1960s and 1970s   Today he is a respected Jazz singer. As informed by Ray Blanco.


Brother John Francis Colbert is reported to be better after suffering a stroke. He is out of the hospital and at Mount Saint Michael Brothers residence. 4300 Murdock Avenue Bronx, NY 10466.  He's looking forward to attending next year's reunion.


Br. Charles is now working in Florida with his community's elderly.  Br. James is still teaching in Rochelle Park, New Jersey.  Another person I contacted was a Brother Bernard.  He left the community, but has done Church work for many years and lives in the Bronx.  Fr. Pat Barry is a pastor in New Rochelle.   Monsignor Ward, Monsignor Hicks, Monsignor Fahey nd Father Hauck have all gone to God.   As informed by Br. Francis M. Haworth.


Ray Blanco is once again up for an Emmy award.  In 1999 he won the award for Best Entertainment Programming Series of the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.


Ken Schappert made the front page of Sports Illustrated while at Villanova.  He is now one of the greatest high school track coaches in Florida.  As informed by Mr. Jack Lamb.


The 2nd school reunion of Bishop Dubois took place on September 30th, 2001.  Even the tragic event of September 11th which will be a dark day in history for all of us, didn't stop us from reuniting classmates, faculty, and friends of the school.  Although the total alumni was diminished to half of what was expected, the event was cheered by all as being successful.  This year's reunion included a band and catering to provide the approximately 100 alumni and their families with happy moments.  The web site of the event includes photos.


Rev. Buddy Quinn's triple bypass operation, I am pleased to report that he survived the surgery with flying colors and is recouperating at this writing.  Terry McTigue (Dubois-53) as rec'd on Dec. 10, 2001.


Father Jim Connolly (later Monsignor) passed away just before Christmas a few years ago.  He was a noted scholar of the history of theology (publishing a few books early in his career with Macmillan), taught English I think, and ran the library.  A very brilliant, funny man.  In his later years he was pastor of a parish outside NYC.  Terence P. Winch, 1963, as rec'd on Dec. 30th, 2001.


I think it would be appropriate for us '63 folks and the others that knew Ed Dolan, that he has gone to the great 'Senior Walk' above.  He was a good guy and liked by all.  As received from Jim Henry, '63 on Feb. 10, 2002.


Mr. George Gianfrancesco ("Mr. G") died suddenly last month.  He was 55 years old and had just retired from teaching.  He taught at Dubois the last year we were open, so many don't know him.  He was at the first reunion but missed the last one because of 9/11.  He taught English and ended his career a Chaminade HS on Long Island.  As received from Father Driscoll on June 22, 2002.


The passing of James B. O'Dowd on April 30, 2002.  James was a great friend from my old neighborhood and parish, Good Shepherd on 207th St., NYC.  He graduated from Dubois in 1970.  I not only knew him from Dubois but also from my old neighborhood. He was a gentle giant with a heart of gold and a great sense of humor.  He was one of my closest friends. Jim passed away in Ireland of a heart attack, while at his father's farm in County Kerry.  Jim attended last year's reunion and was good friends with Gerry Murphy and Jerry Frisbee, from Good Shepherd and Dubois.  Jim and I worked together in lower Manhatten at AT&T Headquarters back in the 80's.   We always kept in touch irregardless of changing job assignments.  He had just retired from Bell Atlantic/Verizon last year, and his untimely death at 50 years old was a real shock to myself and all of his friends.  As received from Angelo M. Jim Hollan, Class of 62, was recently appointed the executive director of The National Child Support Enforcement Association. headquartered in Washington, DC.  The association represents approximatley 63,000 professionals in all 50 states and 4 US territories.   Prior to accepting this position Jim was COO and CFO of Oncostasis, Inc. a cancer research company in the United States and Canada.   Jim has written 5 books, two of which are currently on Amazon.com.  He passes along, for his friends who remember how creative he was with Classic Comics and crib sheets for Latin that he also served as the vice president of the University of Maryland for some time and he was appointed to two seperate White House advisory committees in the 1990's.  It just goes to show what the Dubois spirit will do.  Jim lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife and three cats.   As received from Jim Hollan on Sept. 12, 2002


The tragedy of 9/11 affected us all but more so for the families of two of our alumni.
Walter "Wally" Travers class of 1975 and James V. DeBlase class of 1974.
May they rest in peace.   We did not learn this until approximately one year after.


The 3rd school reunion of Bishop Dubois took place on October 6th, 2002.   Although less alumni were present than those that registered, the reunion was successful in bringing together many alumni and friends.  This year's reunion catered approximately 80 alumni and their families.  Please see the web site for photos.

Rev. Hugh A. Dardis passed away on March 8, 2003. Former Pastor of St Joseph's Church in Wurtsboro, NY and teacher at Bishop DuBois High School, NYC. Beloved son of the late Christopher and Julia (nee Radigan), brother of Brother Christopher Donald F.S.C.    As received from Father Driscoll, Ed Thornton, and Peter Boylan on March 11, 2003.


The class of 1962 had a reunion on the 25th of September 2003.  The classmates attending the function will be meeting at a restaurant in New York.  The organization of the reunion is initiated by John Febles.  This was the first class reunion organized.


Walter "Wally" Travers, who graduated with us in the Class of 1975, passed away on September 11, 2001.   He was working as trader for Cantor Fitzgerald at the World Trade Center.  I heard about it from a good friend of mine, but was struck during the recent anniversary ceremony when his name was announced.

Brother Paul Stokes who taught biology at Dubois in the 50's was later the Academic Dean at Marist College.   He passed away about 20 years ago.
Brothers Brian Desilets and Andrew Molloy taught at Marist after leaving Dubois.

Frank Swetz '55 and Martin Haggerty '55 graduated from Marist in the early 60's.

John Febles called Br. Hugh Turley who taught at Dubois in the early 60’s and is now the Director of Development for the Marist Brothers.  He said that if we were able to save the cross, he was sure that St. Agnes H.S. would be glad to take it.  If St. Agnes did not take the Cross, Br. Hugh said the Marist Brothers would take for their place at Esophos N.Y.

In Memoriam: Peter D. Brown, class of 1961, passed away on April 7, 2003 as a result of a heart attack.  Pete was a good friend who will be missed by all who knew him.  He loved to laugh and his laugh was infectious.  He is survived by his wife Chris and their two children, Michael and Maureen.

Peter Buenahora, class of 1967, passed away on October 8, 2003 after a long hospitalization from complications due to Diabetes in Yonkers, NY.  He was 53 years old.  A nearly life long friend, Pete grew up in Washington Heights and we attended school together from Incarnation thru our years at DuBois.  He was a good friend and is missed terribly.

This past Thursday, the Plainfield Democratic City Committee endorsed the recommendation of its screening committee to select Ray Blanco as the Party's choice for the City Council at Large seat and Don Davis for the Third Ward seat.  Blanco becomes the first Latino to be chosen by the Party for the Plainfield City Council.  However, there will be a primary since at least one candidate has announced his intention to challenge Blanco and another will challenge Davis.  April 12th is the deadline for all to submit their petitions.

Richie was an outstanding basketball star and went on to play for Manhattan College.   He was a devoted high school teacher.

I am very sorry to report to you and our Alumni that I just learned today of the passing of Owen Igoe, class of 1950.  The date was March 18th of this year and was the result of complications from coronary disease.

I regret to report that Rev. Lawrence T. (Buddy) Quinn, a BDHS alumnus - class of 1957, Pastor of St. Ann's Church, Dongan Hills, Staten Island passed away on October 2, 2004.
Fr. Quinn had a distinguished career as a military Chaplain before spending many years ministering to the people of Staten Island.  He will be greatly missed.

Bill Keegan, class of 1960 passed away. He had hip surgery, then suffered a heart attack.

Bishop Dubois High School has finally lost the battle with the city and was demolished at the end of March 2005.
Operating from 1946 through 1976, the building offered a Catholic school education to a number of students.
The first graduating class was that of 1950 and the last 1976.
Thanks to Nick Viisconti, '62 and some firefighters, the cross was saved and temporarily moved to the 143 Street Fire House in Manhattan just before the fall of the building.
While we are at it, we should also thank Luis’ Vazquez’s, '62 wife Kenia who after reading a newspaper article, got the ball rolling.
John Febles spoke to Br. Hugh and was informed that the Brothers would like the cross for the Marist Retreat house in Esopus N.Y.

Donald G. Whitmore, Class of 66, died Monday, May 30th, from complications from cancer of the prostate.   He was buried yesterday, June 2nd in St. Charles Cemetery, Huntington (L.I.), NY.  He was 56 years old on March 12, 2005.   Donald is survived by his wife Phyllis; two sons and two daughters.  His youngest is 13 years old.   He had been battling this terrible disease for over two years and had retired as a police officer in 2002.  The cancer had metastasized to his spine and bones.  He could not walk and endured agonizing pain.  Hopefully, he is at peace.

Monsignor McMahon, the last principal of Bishop Dubois High School, entered into eternal rest on August 7, 2005.  He was 84 years old.
The Funeral Mass was held today at Holy Spirit Church, Cortland Manor.

Monsignor Kowsky passed away in the mid 80's after serving as chaplain to the NYPD as a full Inspector.
He was in charge of their alcoholic program and I understand that he was a very severe disciplinarian.   He had retired earlier as a Colonel in the US Army where he was a chaplain.  His brother was also a high-ranking police official in the NPD.

The Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority in June of 2000 dedicated a plaza south of the North Cove in memory of Monsignor John J. Kowsky, former Chaplain of the Police & Fire Departments and former pastor of St. Joseph’s Chapel in Battery Park City.

Michael Larkin, class of 1959, passed away on Nov. 8, 2005.  He died from lung cancer after a very valiant fight.

Paul Fruscella, class of l960, passed away in December, he joined the NYPD in 1964 and I believe he retired as a Captain.

Maurice Fitzgerald, class of '49 (referring to grammar school) died on April 3rd, 2006.   He lived in Gunnson, Colorado and for a long time and suffered with Parkinson's disease.
He was a big strong kid.  He had a tryout with the Yankees and they asked him to go to their farm team in Binghamton, N.Y. but he refused the offer.

Ray Blanco, class of 1973, died Friday the 28th of July from an apparent heart attack.  He was 50 years old and president of the Plainfield City Council in Plainfield, New Jersey.  I never met him but know he was active politically in Central New Jersey.
He was a producer and popular activist as reported in the article from the Sunday Star Ledger stated.

Andrew Molloy ,who taught science courses at Dubois from 1953-56 passed away on August 19th at the age of 76.
A member of the Marist Brothers during his tenure at Dubois, Andy received his doctorate in chemistry from Catholic University and taught at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY for many years. He was the teacher and colleague of Ed O'Keefe and Frank Swetz of the class of '55.

Bob Dowling of Pelham Manor passed away on November 17, 2006.  He graduated from Bishop Dubois H.S. in 1960.
He was originally from St. John's Parish in Kingsbridge.  He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War.  He worked in the Telecommunications Industry.

Leslie Correa, class of 1970, passed away on July 22, 2004.  He was a retired High School Vice-principal in Conneticut.
He is survived by a wife and 3 children.

Al "Cookie" Latchford, class of 1950, passed away on July 19, 2007.
Retired City of Port Richey Police Chief of New Port Richey, formerly of Countryside and New York, New York, he died at the young age of 75.  Al was a U.S. Veteran who served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hornet during the Korean Conflict.
Al enjoyed a 40 year successful law enforcement career as a New York State trooper, duty officer for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, sergeant for the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Airport Police, deputy with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, and retired as the chief of police for the city of Port Richey.   He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and retired New York State Trooper Association.   Al enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling, conducting crime prevention programs, landscaping, and spending time with his family. Al will be missed by family and friends across the country.
He is survived by 8 children and 14 grandchildren.

Wanted to notify all of Reggie OBrien's, class of 1957, death.  It's been almost a year, he left us on the 28th of Feb. 2007.  He will always be remembered as a gentle and loving friend and brother.

I graduated 1953 and after Military and career in NYS Troopers continued working for the State Police in Florida until 2002.
I've been a resident since 2/1982 and have lived all over the State.  We have several other grads here too... Roger Fernandez in Jacksonville, John Mustin in So. Daytonna.
Where are you teaching and residing? I live here on the 6th hole of the Tuscawilla CC in Winter Springs.
I have 3 brothers, 2 of whom graduated also from Dubois, Larry 1955 of Norwalk,CT and Bill 1958 of Atlanta,GA..
There were several other alumnus of BDHS who have since passed away, Al Latchford of New Port Richey and Bernard Connor, also of New Port Richey.  There was one more alumnus, Ralph Garcia of Miami but he finished school in Florida.   Hope this information meets your needs.

Gaetano Antonacci, Class of 1967, passed away on Friday 9/19/2008.
He was 60 years old and lived in Levittown, NY.  He graduated from St. John's University and had a career in finance.

John D. Kelly, class of 1957, my fellow classmates that my long time friend from Incarnation parish in New York, has passed away.  He died on Feb 7, 2009 after a 3 year bout with cancer.   He was 69 years of age, left a wife and 5 grown children and was a great father and friend.   He worked for Western Electric.

Sorry to advise the passing of John Reilly, class of 1975, who died in his sleep at his home in Richmond on July 22.   He was a couple of classes behind me at Dubois.  Probably class of 48.  He went on to St.John's, left NY and lived for many years in Richmond.

My husband was Tom Tevington, graduated 1967.   We were married midway through his tour in Vietnam; later had three children.
He died unexpectedly on Sept 30, 1987 at the age of 39.   He loved Biship DuBois and talked about it a lot.   I am delighted to find the website - he would have loved to have come on the site and reconnected with his classmates.

Kevin McGuire a graduate from the BDHS class of 1969 passed away on Jan. 17, 2010.
Kevin lived in Sunnyside in Queens, N.Y. and worked for NYC Housing Authority.
While a Student at BDHS he lived in the Inwood Section of Manhattan and was a Parishioner at Our Lady Queen of Martyr's Parish.   As informed via email by Marty Halpin, on Jan. 19th 2010.

Steve Macklin a graduate from the BDHS class of 1974 passed away on February 06, 2010.
I talked with Steve Macklin's wife and she informed me that he died of a heart attack in her arms.
Steve played JV and Varsity basket ball in Harlem for Bishop Dubois.
For those of you who are in the greater Atlanta area, the wake and service will held on Monday February 15th, at the Allen Temple Church located on 232 Arnold Mill Road in Woodstock Ga.
